Tourist Climbing Historic Temple Beaten and Arrested

An unauthorized tourist who climbed the Kukulkan Temple in Chichen Itza, considered one of the Seven Wonders of the World in Mexico, was first attacked by the local people and then arrested. Climbing the famous Kukulkan Temple in Chichen Itza, in Mexico’s Yucatan state, without permission, an Alman tourist faced the locals’ backlash and was subsequently detained. The incident occurred on Thursday, March 20th, as the tourist was seen scaling the temple wall, captured by Sky News and Daily Mail. Witnesses mentioned that the locals showed their disapproval and hurled insults at the tourist. A security guard quickly climbed the temple and intervened with the tourist. Mexican National Guards arrived at the scene and took the tourist into custody. However, the footage also showed some angry citizens attacking the tourist. According to Mexico News Daily, there were around 8,000 to 9,000 visitors at the site during the incident. Despite being listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Chichen Itza is also recognized as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Chichen Itza authorities emphasized that climbing the pyramid is prohibited and unauthorized climbs in the past have caused significant damage to the structure. Under Mexico’s Federal Law on Monuments and Archeological Sites, individuals caught climbing the pyramid can face fines ranging from $3,200 to $16,000, with possible imprisonment depending on the extent of the damage. Tourists causing harm to historical sites are facing criticism worldwide. In November, an American tourist was arrested in Japan for allegedly damaging the entrance to the Meiji Shrine in Tokyo’s Shibuya district. The tourist was accused of carving letters onto the wooden column of the shrine, causing damage. Officials reiterated the need for visitors to abide by the rules in order to protect historical heritage.
