In response to US President Donald Trump’s plan to purchase Greenland, an autonomous region attached to Denmark, a campaign has been initiated to make California a “Danish territory.” An explanation about the campaign was made on a website called “Denmarkification.” The explanation stated that the campaign aims to make California a territory of Denmark by purchasing it from the US in response to Trump’s plan to buy Greenland. Trump, a Republican, is known not to be fond of California, one of the strongholds of the Democrats. The statement conveyed that “Trump is not considered the biggest fan of California. We are confident that he will be willing to give it away for an appropriate price.” The statement emphasized that Trump can do whatever he sets his mind to and that citizens will not be able to “stop” him. It was mentioned that “If Trump wants to sell California, he will.”
“We will even provide Danish pastries!” References were made to controversial topics in the US, suggesting that this way the rule of law, universal healthcare, and fact-based politics could be valid in California. Among the reasons for choosing California, its warm and sunny climate, dominance in technology, avocado production, freedom it holds, and the fact that it includes Disneyland, one of the country’s most famous amusement parks, were listed. It was noted that if the state is purchased, the name of Danish writer Hans Christian Andersenland will be given to Disneyland. The statement included, “To sweeten the deal, we will even provide Danish pastries for life.” The campaign gathered signatures from approximately 200,000 people.
TRUMP’S STATEMENTS REGARDING GREENLAND
On December 23, 2024, Trump reiterated his statement that Greenland should be under the control of his country in a post on his Truth Social account, stating that ownership and control of the island are an “absolute necessity.” Trump’s words drew reactions from various groups, including Greenlandic officials. Greenland Prime Minister Mute Bourup Egede stated, “Greenland belongs to the people of Greenland. We are not for sale, and we will never be for sale. We will not lose our long-standing struggle for freedom.” Greenland, one of the two autonomous regions under the Kingdom of Denmark along with the Faroe Islands, is located 2,900 kilometers from Denmark to which it is attached.
