Trump Holds Talks with Japanese Prime Minister: “They Provided Very Bad Treatment”

President Trump disclosed that he had a meeting with the Prime Minister of Japan, Ishiba, stating that “they provided very bad treatment in terms of trade to the US.” Through a post on his Truth Social account, President Donald Trump evaluated the new customs tariffs imposed on several countries and their economic relationship with Japan. Trump claimed that “countries from all over the world are talking to us” and defended the establishment of “tough but fair parameters.” Trump mentioned that he had a conversation with Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru this morning according to US local time and said, “They provided very bad treatment in terms of trade to the US. They don’t buy our cars; but we buy millions of cars from them. It needs to change, especially with China.” Trump claimed that due to the tariffs imposed, the country made “billions of dollars of income in a week.” Trump also declared that despite China imposing an additional 34% customs duty on the US, they managed to generate this income. He argued that countries have been benefiting from the US’s “blessings for years and have earned enough” and that the past US administrations should be blamed for “allowing this.” Trump signed an executive order on April 2 imposing additional customs duties on all products imported into the US. The tariff rates applied to many trading partners of the US range from 10% to 50%. Many countries and the European Union (EU) reacted to Trump’s tariffs, stating that the rates would be negotiated with the US.
