Trump is evaluating withdrawing approximately 35,000 active personnel from Germany, which could further strain US-European relations. Sources close to the administration, speaking to The Telegraph, stated that Trump, who has repeatedly warned Europe to contribute more to its defense capacity, is increasingly disappointed with the continent’s lack of urgency for war. There are about 160,000 active duty personnel deployed outside the United States, with a large portion stationed in Germany. A source close to the White House mentioned that “Trump is upset with Europe appearing to press for war.” US National Security Spokesperson Brian Hughes stated, “Although no specific announcement is imminent, the US military always considers relocating troops worldwide to address threats to our interests.”

NO SUPPORT FROM HUNGARY TO UKRAINE The Telegraph reports that Trump is considering shifting troops from Germany to Hungary, a country with close ties to Russia. During an emergency EU summit in Brussels on Thursday, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban vetoed the commitment to support Ukraine, signed by all other member states. As a frequent opponent of sanctions against Moscow, Orban, a close ally of Russia, opposes the EU’s measures against Moscow.

FOCUS ON THOSE INCREASING DEFENSE SPENDING Trump is said to be contemplating redeploying some US troops in Europe to countries within NATO that have increased defense spending to meet their financial goals. This is part of the administration’s plan to redraw the NATO engagement, favoring countries that spend more on defense. Trump has criticized NATO countries for failing to meet the current 2% spending target multiple times, arguing that this inequality imposes an unfair burden on the US.
