TÜİK’s Announcement on Pension Calculations

The Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) reported that pension calculations are done independently with scientific and technical autonomy based on data compiled from the field in response to allegations regarding the calculation of pension benefits. TÜİK addressed claims related to the calculation of pension benefits in a written statement. It mentioned that certain news outlets and social media accounts have made baseless allegations that do not align with reality nor scientific accuracy. TÜİK highlighted that attempts were made to create a false perception for political reasons. The statement emphasized that the comparisons made between the Consumer Price Index and the Inflation Rate prepared by the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce lack meaningful results due to differences in base years, definitions, classification types, weighting structures, geographic coverage, calculation methods, and target income groups of these two indices. The announcement stated that the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce, in response to these discrepancies, has made changes to its base year and methodology, and initiated a new index called the Istanbul Consumer Price Index as of 2025. The statement also addressed other unfounded allegations that aimed to manipulate situations involving the presidency’s term and regional director appointments. It clarified that the TÜİK President is appointed for a specific period like other similar appointments through a Presidential Decree, which is common practice. Regarding the alleged changes in the appointments of regional directors in 2020, it was mentioned that some directors were relocated to other regions, while others were appointed as directors in different areas, emphasizing that these changes were routine and not related to the inflation calculation, as claimed. The statement mentioned that internet data accounts for only 5% of the overall price data in the Consumer Price Index, emphasizing that internet data has limited weight in inflation calculations. TÜİK collects price data comprehensively from various sources such as fieldwork, barcode inputs, and many other different references. Contrary to claims, the institute collects web data centrally and automatically on a daily basis, ensuring that there is no manual intervention, providing clear instructions to regional offices, and monitoring the same products from fixed websites regularly throughout the year according to international standards. Therefore, the allegations raised have no correlation with reality. In conclusion, TÜİK reiterated its commitment to calculate the Consumer Price Index independently based on the data collected from the field, maintaining its scientific and technical autonomy. It assured the public that it would exercise all legal rights regarding the matter.
