Tunnel collapse traps workers: “We called out, but received no response”

At least eight workers were trapped when a tunnel under construction collapsed in India. Reports indicated a 200-meter area filled with debris, no contact with the trapped workers, malfunctioning internal communication system, and a collapsed air chamber. It was noted that the trapped workers did not respond to any calls during the rescue operations.

An urgent operation was launched to rescue at least eight workers trapped in a tunnel under construction in the south Indian state of Telangana. When a section of the tunnel began to collapse, dozens of workers managed to escape, but eight remained trapped. Videos show rescue teams calling out the names of some workers. An official involved in the rescue operation in the area stated, “When we reached the end of the tunnel boring machine, we called out their names, but received no response. There is a 200-meter area filled with debris. Until this debris is cleared, we won’t be able to accurately locate the trapped workers to rescue them.”

“TUNNEL FILLED WITH WATER, NO SOUNDS FROM WORKERS” A responsible official reported that the area between 11-13 km of the tunnel is filled with water, and debris removal operations won’t start until the water is cleared. High-level government officials had previously stated that there was no contact with the trapped individuals, the internal communication system was malfunctioning, and the air chamber and conveyor belt had collapsed.

INCIDENT WHERE 41 WORKERS WERE RESCUED In 2023, a collapsed tunnel under construction in the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand, India, led to the rescue of 41 workers. The rescue mission was expected to take a few days. However, reaching the workers took 17 days. This incident was considered one of the most significant and complex rescue operations in recent history, with international experts assisting and multiple rescue organizations leading the effort.
