Tunnels filled with safes, locked armored doors: Mysterious rooms discovered in Syria

Under the summer house owned by Bashar al-Assad’s deposed brother Maher al-Assad in the capital of Syria, Damascus, tunnels containing safes and rooms with unopenable armored doors have been uncovered. The summer house, belonging to the commander of the 4th Armored Division, an elite unit of the collapsed regime’s army, was filmed in Damascus near the Damascus-Beirut highway on a high hill overlooking the capital. The residence consists of three floors surrounded by high walls, with a helicopter pad in the spacious courtyard of the building. The ground floor of the summer house contains a parking lot and a meeting room, while the lowest floor features an armored door leading to a tunnel network. After descending the 22 steps from the door, an intermediate section is reached. Here, a tunnel apparently used for relaxation is visible. After descending 130 more steps, the tunnel networks are reached. The tunnels, which include compartments such as electrical lines, ventilation, bedroom, kitchen, and bathroom, are secured with armored doors. Some of the rooms in the main tunnel that lead to the right and left have emptied safes and stands displaying luxury watch brands. Two rooms with unopenable armored doors are located in the tunnels, their contents yet unknown. One branch of the tunnel network, which is approximately 3 kilometers long, leads to the main headquarters of the collapsed regime’s 4th Armored Division. Vehicle access to the tunnels is also visible towards the Syria-Lebanon highway. Fayiz Muhammad, one of the security guards protecting the summer house, stated in an interview with AA that Maher al-Assad used the place for office and relaxation purposes. Muhammad mentioned the presence of safe rooms in the tunnels under the summer house, adding “There are still two rooms in the tunnels with safes where the armored doors cannot be opened. Additionally, there are documents and papers belonging to the 4th Armored Division in the summer house that include Maher al-Assad’s instructions and correspondence.”
