Turkey and the European Union meet after 6 years: What was discussed in the critical meeting?

Turkey and the European Union held a high-level economic meeting after 6 years. Minister Simsek stated that a good dialogue in economics had begun with the European Union. Finance Minister Mehmet Simsek evaluated the Turkey-EU High-Level Economic Dialogue Meeting held in Brussels. Simsek indicated that the first meeting after a 6-year gap within the scope of the Turkey-EU High-Level Economic Dialogue was significant for developing relations between Turkey and the EU. He emphasized that dialogues with top EU officials went positively and productively. Simsek addressed global challenges faced by both Turkey and Europe, discussing topics such as the outlook of Europe and the Turkish economy. He highlighted the opportunity to explain Turkey’s reform and disinflation efforts. Simsek pointed out that perspectives on the EU’s new policies were also discussed, emphasizing the importance of limiting the effects of global changes by working together, and discussed cooperation that could benefit both the EU and Turkey. The Minister mentioned that the revitalization of Turkey-EU relations was on the agenda. Simsek also noted that they had discussions on updating the Customs Union, visa liberalization, and many other issues directly with Valdis Dombrovskis, the European Commission’s Executive Vice President for an Economy that Works for people, and Marta Kos, the European Commission’s Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement. Simsek stated that senior officials from European-based international financial institutions such as the European Investment Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development also participated in the meetings. They discussed investments in Turkey and the available financing opportunities. Minister Simsek mentioned that they also held a high-level dialogue meeting for the business community and engaged in one-on-one meetings with EU officials, describing the atmosphere as constructive and emphasizing that the economic dialogue had a positive start. He expressed hope that this dialogue would pave the way for other dialogues to strengthen in the fields of transportation, energy, and politics. Simsek announced the completion of the fourth meeting within the Turkey-EU High-Level Economic Dialogue and revealed that the fifth meeting would take place in Turkey next year.
