US Agriculture Secretary: Imported Eggs from Turkey and South Korea

The egg crisis continues in the United States.

US Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins stated that they imported eggs from Turkey and South Korea to alleviate supply shortages caused by the bird flu outbreak, which led to an increase in egg prices nationwide. Rollins mentioned that they are in talks with other countries regarding egg imports as well. Speaking to reporters at the White House, Rollins stated, “Currently, eggs are being imported from Turkey and South Korea. I discussed with a few more countries yesterday, imports will begin from them soon. We have not signed agreements yet, so I do not want to disclose which countries they are.” Rollins emphasized that they are talking about “hundreds of millions” of eggs in the short term, which is crucial to continue lowering prices. She conveyed that they will return to domestic egg producers once the chicken population in the country increases again and the sector starts operating at full capacity.

INCREASE EXCEEDED 50% The bird flu outbreak in the US in recent times had a negative impact on egg supply nationwide. The culling of millions of chickens on farms due to the bird flu outbreak disrupted egg production and this situation was reflected in prices. The rise in egg prices in the country reached 58.8% on an annual basis in February. The US, increasing egg imports due to the disruption in production, had also started importing from Turkey, from which it last imported eggs in January 2023.
