US-Iran talks to be held in Oman on April 12

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Erakchi announced that indirect talks between Iran and the US will begin in Oman on April 12. Erakchi shared on social media platform X, stating, “Iran and the US will meet for high-level indirect talks in Oman this Saturday. This is both an opportunity and a test. The ball is in the US’s court.” Former US President Donald Trump, who unilaterally withdrew from the nuclear deal with Iran in 2018, sent a letter to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei last month calling for direct nuclear negotiations. In response to the letter, which also included threats, Iran announced through Oman that they would not negotiate directly under threat and pressure, only being prepared for indirect talks. Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Ismail Bekayi stated at a press conference held in Tehran yesterday that they were waiting for Washington’s decision on the proposed format of indirect negotiations. Bekayi had mentioned that Oman was the preferred mediator. President Trump also revealed that they were almost engaging in direct talks at the highest level with Iran regarding their nuclear program. Trump said, “We have a very important meeting on Saturday and we are in direct contact with them. Perhaps an agreement will be reached, which would be wonderful.” Additionally, Trump stated, “Iran cannot have nuclear weapons, and if the talks are not successful, it will actually be a very bad day for Iran.”
