According to reports from the US press, The New York Times stated that US troops will be withdrawn from Syria. The news suggests that the US will also close three military bases in the region.

Based on information from two senior US officials, the report claims that the number of American troops in the region will be reduced from 2,000 to 1,400. Along with 600 troops, three operational bases in the region will be shut down. The news also mentions that a review will be conducted in about two months to determine whether the withdrawal will continue. It is alleged that one official mentioned that at least 500 US troops should remain in Syria.

Israeli media reported that the US government had informed the Tel Aviv administration that it would gradually begin withdrawing troops from Syria within two months. The Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth reported that Israel had attempted to prevent the US from withdrawing military assets from Syria. It was stated that the Tel Aviv administration was trying to prevent this move out of fear that Turkey would acquire more strategic assets in the new Syria.

ISRAEL’S CONCERN ABOUT TURKEY Israeli officials reportedly expressed their “serious concerns” but it was reported that it did not affect the US withdrawal decision. According to a senior Israeli official, the withdrawal of US troops from northern Syria carries the potential to increase tensions between Turkey and Israel and enhance Turkey’s appetite for controlling “more strategic military points in Syria.”

Israel is reportedly concerned about Turkey limiting Israel’s freedom of movement and posing a potential threat to the Syrian territories under Israeli occupation in the future.
