Vatican: Pope’s Health Condition Remains Unchanged

The health condition of Pope Francis, the spiritual leader of Catholics and the President of the Vatican State, has not changed. A statement from the Vatican mentioned that “the Pope’s clinical condition remained stable today.” After spending 17 days at the Gemelli Hospital in Rome due to severe bronchitis at the beginning of February and being diagnosed with bilateral pneumonia, a new statement was issued by the Vatican regarding the 88-year-old Pope’s current condition. The statement included the words, “The Pope’s clinical condition remained stable today. The Pope did not require mechanical ventilation, only receiving high-flow oxygen therapy. He also has no fever.” It was noted in the statement that due to the complexity of the clinical picture, doctors were maintaining a cautious approach towards the progress of the illness. During two public events on February 9 and 12, Pope Francis mentioned he had bronchitis and had difficulty breathing, which led him to ask his assistants to read his speeches. On February 14, a polymicrobial infection was detected in the Pope’s respiratory tract. The Vatican announced on February 18 that the Pope had been diagnosed with bilateral pneumonia. The Pope’s doctors stated on February 21 that although he was not completely out of danger, there was no immediate life-threatening danger to Pope Francis. On February 22, the Pope suffered another asthma attack, leading to a critical condition. Despite the critical nature of his health on February 24, the Vatican reported a slight improvement while still remaining critical. On February 25, the Vatican described his condition as critical but stable. Improvement in the Pope’s condition was reported by the Vatican on February 26 and 27. On February 28, it was reported that the Pope experienced a bronchospasm crisis, underwent bronchoaspiration, received mechanical ventilation, and responded positively to treatment. His condition remained stable yesterday as well. In 2021, Pope Francis was hospitalized at the Gemelli Hospital and underwent colon surgery. Using a wheelchair due to knee pain, the Pope had previously been treated at the Gemelli Hospital twice in 2023, once for shortness of breath and once for the placement of a prosthesis in the abdominal wall.
