Volkswagen transitioning to more intuitive vehicle controls with physical buttons

German automotive giant Volkswagen has announced its decision to revert back to physical buttons to enhance the in-car user experience. This decision was made in light of user feedback in recent years regarding the transition to touch panels for in-car controls. The return of physical buttons will be implemented in the electric vehicle model named ID.2all, scheduled to be launched in 2025.

Volkswagen re-evaluated the in-car control design after receiving intense criticism from users regarding touch panels.

Many users expressed that touch controls caused distraction while driving, highlighting that physical buttons offered a more intuitive user experience. Particularly for controls such as sound, air conditioning, and hazard lights, users convinced Volkswagen that they are more safely operated with physical buttons. Company officials stated that the primary goal of this change is to increase user satisfaction and improve driving safety. Andreas Mindt, Volkswagen’s Design Chief, told Autocar that physical buttons will be placed underneath the touch screen for functions such as sound controls, heating, fan speed, and hazard light activation. Mindt mentioned that the era of using the touch screen for every feature related to the car is over, stating, “The company will never, never make this mistake again. This is a car, not a phone.”

Volkswagen’s decision underscores the significance of user-centric design in the automotive industry. Reverting to physical buttons may lead other automakers to reconsider their strategies regarding in-car user experience. Hyundai, a major player in the sector, revealed last year that people responded with “stressful and angry” reactions when they couldn’t easily control a function during emergencies. Despite the strong relationship with technology, users tend to prefer a single physical button over a touch screen in urgent situations.

ID.2all and Future Models
Volkswagen aims to ensure that users have a safe and comfortable driving experience in their new vehicle models. ID.2all stands out with an affordable pricing strategy as part of the brand’s strategy to reach a wider customer base. The company plans to apply the physical button approach to other future electric vehicle models as well.

The German automotive giant is planning to catch up with competitors like Tesla in the electric vehicle race with the launch of ID.2all in 2025. This model, with a 5-door design, will offer a spacious interior similar to the Volkswagen Golf, yet be as affordable as the Polo. It is expected to hit the European market with a starting price of 25,000 euros.
