Warning Bells Ringing on Our Planet: Highest Level in 800 Thousand Years Recorded

According to a study by the United Nations World Meteorological Organization, the carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere are at the highest point in 800 thousand years.

The United Nations (UN) study revealing that the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is at the highest level in 800 thousand years suggests that the year 2024 will likely go down in history as the hottest on record.

Last year is expected to be the first year to exceed pre-industrial levels by 1.5 degrees.

In its annual climate assessment, the UN World Meteorological Organization reported that signs of human-induced climate change reached new peaks last year, with record levels of greenhouse gases (coupled with the El Nino weather phenomenon and other factors) leading to record temperatures. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, stating “Our planet is sending out more danger signals,” called on world leaders to accelerate climate action. Guterres’ remarks came after U.S. President Donald Trump launched a comprehensive attack on environmental policies, including withdrawing the U.S. from the Paris Climate Agreement for the second time. The research, which brings together data from member countries and partner organizations, shows that the global average surface temperature exceeded the 1850-1900 level by 1.55 degrees.

With an uncertainty margin of 0.13 degrees in both directions, last year was the hottest year in the 175-year observational record.
