Musk stated that the purpose of DOGE is to reestablish democracy, emphasizing that without a proper feedback loop from the people to the government and with the dominance of bureaucracy, the meaning of democracy would cease to exist. Musk said, “If people cannot vote and ensure that their will is determined by elected representatives such as the President, Senate, and House of Representatives, then we are not living in democracy, but in bureaucracy.” Emphasizing the need for accountability of bureaucracy to the people, Musk expressed that the budget deficit must be addressed. Musk warned that the country would “go bankrupt” if nothing is done about the budget deficit. Indicating that the interest payments on the national debt exceed the Defense Department’s budget, Musk said, “We are spending a lot on defense. However, if this continues, we will bankrupt the country.” Musk stated, “Reducing federal spending is not optional for us; it is a necessity.” Musk also commented on some findings from DOGE, pointing out that it appears strange to them that there are quite a few people in bureaucracy who seem to accumulate millions of dollars in wealth while receiving apparently only a few hundred thousand dollars in salary in their positions. Alleging that there is a need for basic controls at the US Treasury, Musk noted that ministries cannot pass scrutiny due to the lack of payment categorization. Musk said, “If money is spent poorly, if taxpayers’ money is not spent reasonably through a logical approval process, then it is wrong. Taxes must be spent wisely on things important to the people.
