When Should the Boiler Be Shut Down? The Controversial Question of Spring, Here Is the Exact Date

Every spring, the same debate starts in millions of homes: When should the boiler be shut down? This question was answered by a survey. Here is the time when boilers should be shut down. According to the survey, when the outside temperature permanently rises to 15°C or above, shutting down the heating system is the most ideal option. Experts say this temperature is the “ideal time” to consider turning off the boiler. Weather data in the UK shows that in early April, average temperatures exceed 14°C in many regions. It generally reaches around 15°C by mid to late April. At this point, continuous heating is no longer necessary, especially for well-insulated homes. Participants in the survey were asked when and why they shut down their boilers every spring. A striking result emerged: 16% of respondents indicated that the boiler debate was one of the biggest issues at home. Additionally, while the decision to shut down the boiler mostly comes from men, about half of Brits admitted to secretly turning the boiler back on without their partners knowing. These individuals are referred to as “secret boiler restorers” by researchers. Shutting down the boiler does not necessarily mean feeling cold. Programmable thermostats allow temperatures to be automatically controlled. Furthermore, good insulation and cutting off drafts help maintain indoor comfort. A gradual transition is recommended for homes with children, elderly individuals, or those at risk from a health perspective: “Lowering the temperature by 1°C per day or shortening the daily heating time by 30-60 minutes provides a softer transition.” Even though temperatures increase during the day, evenings can still be cool, so thermostats can be set to detect these transitions automatically. Accordingly, a range of 12-13°C is a good threshold for the boiler to automatically kick in. This study aligns with another recent survey of 2,000 participants, where the average ideal indoor temperature was determined to be 19.5°C. The World Health Organization, however, recommends a more cautious approach by suggesting a value of 18°C for indoor temperature.
