WHO announces end of Marburg virus outbreak

The General Director of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, declared the end of the Marburg virus outbreak in Tanzania. WHO has announced the end of the Marburg virus outbreak in Tanzania. In his statement, WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said, “Good news from Tanzania, the Marburg outbreak has ended. Increasing expertise in health emergency response in Africa has been crucial in effective outbreak control. We thank our colleagues who tirelessly worked to control the outbreak.” The Marburg virus, which is in the same family as Ebola, can have a death rate of up to 88% in infected individuals. Transmitted from bats to humans, the virus spreads through contact with infected individuals. Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, diarrhea, vomiting, and in some cases, severe blood loss.
