Women Earn Less, Fear Walking Alone

Women represent 49.98% of Turkey’s population. According to TURKSTAT data, women earn less than men at all educational levels. 36 out of 100 women reported feeling anxious when walking alone at night. The Turkish Statistical Institute (TURKSTAT) revealed the results of the study “Women in Statistics 2024”. Accordingly, 49.98% of the country’s population consists of women, while 50.02% are men. The female population in Turkey was 42,811,834, and the male population was 42,853,110. The Gender Wage Gap occurred in favor of men across all educational levels. The wage gap is defined as the percentage of the male income in relation to the female income. According to Wage Structure Statistics, the highest gap with an average annual gross wage was 17.4% among university graduates, while the lowest was 13.2% among those with primary education or less. Turkey’s Grand National Assembly data showed that by the end of 2024, there were 118 female MPs out of 593, compared to 475 male MPs. The proportion of female MPs in the Parliament was 9.1% in 2007 and increased to 19.9% in 2024. In higher education, the percentage of female professors was 27.6% in the 2010-2011 academic year but grew to 34.6% in the 2023-2024 academic year. Among associate professors in higher education, the proportion of female associate professors was 32.2% in the 2010-2011 academic year, rising to 42.1% in the 2023-2024 academic year. The Life Satisfaction Survey revealed that in 2024, 35.9% of women felt unsafe walking alone at night in their living environment, while among men, this was 15.2%. 47.8% of women and 69.7% of men reported feeling safe walking alone at night. When alone at home, the percentage of women feeling unsafe was 8.4%, compared to 3.1% of men. 78.9% of women and 88.5% of men felt secure when alone at home. According to Poverty and Living Conditions Statistics, in 2024, 29.3% of the total population was at risk of poverty or social exclusion, with 31.5% women and 27.1% men falling under this category. When looking at the same rates for the 18-64 age group, the percentage of women at risk of poverty or social exclusion was 29.5%, compared to 23.1% for men.
