Yellow Fever Outbreak in Colombia: State of Emergency Declared

The government of Colombia has declared a “health emergency” due to the increase in yellow fever cases and virus-related deaths in the country. In Colombia, a South American country, a “health emergency” has been declared nationwide by the government due to the rise in cases of yellow fever. Minister of Health Guillermo Alfonso Jaramillo announced that 74 cases and 34 deaths have been confirmed since the beginning of the year in the ongoing epidemic. Yellow fever is a viral disease transmitted through the bites of Aedes and Haemagogus species of mosquitoes. Minister Jaramillo stated in his remarks on the situation in the country that the most critical situation regarding the yellow fever outbreak in Colombia was observed in Tolima in the west, where 22 cases have been identified. The number of cases more than doubled. According to the information provided by the “Vax Before Travel News” website, which includes details about tourism and vaccination, there were 131 yellow fever cases and 53 yellow fever-related deaths in the first three months of 2025 in the Americas. This was more than twice the number of cases seen in all of 2024. According to the Pan American Health Organization, Brazil, Colombia, and Peru are the countries most affected by the outbreak. While it is mentioned that there are two approved vaccines against the disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the yellow fever vaccine is recommended for individuals aged 9 months and above who are traveling to regions with a high risk of the virus.
