Zelensky’s Response to European Army: “This Will Not Happen”

Poland’s Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski responded to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s call for the establishment of a “European army,” stating that “If you mean the merging of national armies, this will not happen.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky received a response from Poland regarding his statement at the 61st Munich Security Conference that “there is a need for an armed force in Europe.”

Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski cautioned about the possibility of establishing a European army, stating, “We should be careful with this term because people understand different things. If you mean the merging of national armies, this will not happen. However, I advocate for Europe, the European Union, to enhance its defense capabilities.”

“OUT OF THE QUESTION”

Sikorski noted that the EU currently forms a strengthened brigade and emphasized, “If the US wants us to take a step in defense, it should be a national component, a NATO component, but also an EU component to increase our production capacity and to have subsidies for defense industries from the EU, and for there to be an EU force worthy of its name.”

He highlighted that the presence of Polish soldiers in Ukraine is “out of the question because Poland’s duty to NATO is to protect its eastern flank, its own territory.”
